First VDL Citea articulated buses for GVB Amsterdam

In late February 2014, 23 Citea articulated buses will be put in service by Amsterdam's GVB, the public transport operator. This is VDL's first order for the articulated version of the Citea bus (Citea SLFA – Low Floor Articulated). These will also be the first VDL Euro 6 public transport buses to be put in service in the Netherlands. The contract between GVB Amsterdam and VDL Bus & Coach was signed on Wednesday 6 November. VDL previously delivered 70 12-metre Citeas SLF (Low Floor) to GVB in 2011.

Rémi Henkemans, Managing Director VDL Bus & Coach bv: “Earlier this year the Citea low floor range was expanded with the articulated version. With the Citea SLFA, VDL Bus & Coach builds on the success of the Citea SLF. We are proud that GVB has once again chosen the Low Floor variant of the Citea family for the Dutch capital. GVB's positive experience with the 12-metre Citea SLF over the past few years demonstrates that the Citea Low Floor range is an ideal city bus. For VDL it is, of course, a particularly special milestone in that this order is also our first delivery of Euro 6 vehicles for the Dutch public transport market.”

Citea SLFA
GVB has chosen the 18-metre variant of the Citea SLFA in a 3-door version, with the first door a single-leaf version and the other two doors a double-leaf version. During the design of the Citea SLFA considerable attention was given to the flow of passengers from the entry door and to the exit doors. The articulated Citeas for GVB are being equipped with Euro 6 engines of type FPT (Fiat Powertrain Technologies) Cursor 9 – 228 kW (310 hp) and a ZF EcoLife gearbox. The buses for GVB have seating for 47 + 6 + 1 and space for around 77 standing passengers.

Thanks to its innovative lightweight construction, the Citea has a low net weight, which results in excellent fuel economy and minimal emissions of harmful exhaust gases. Add to that the long service life and the result is maximum ‘Profit of Ownership’. It's not surprising, then, that the Citea SLF was named ‘Bus of the Year 2011’. The low floor construction makes it exceptionally easy to enter the bus and offers optimal access, for travellers with a baby buggy or wheelchair for example. This applies both to the front section of the bus and the section behind the articulation.

GVB
GVB provides the public transportation service in and around Amsterdam with tram, bus, metro and ferry service. The organization moves passengers with 56 bus lines (including 12 night lines), 16 tram lines, four metro lines and 8 ferry connections. The GVB network carries an average of 740,000 passenger trips per day. The quality goal of the some 3,750 employees is continued improvement of customer satisfaction among travellers in public transport that is safe, on time, clean and customer-friendly.
