New VDL Futura FMD2

The VDL Futura FMD2 is a new model within the VDL Futura family. The Futura FMD2 is a multipurpose coach that takes maximum advantage of the modular construction technique employed by VDL and all the related benefits. Carefully considered lightweight concepts, aerodynamic design, and the most optimal drivelines with low fuel consumption ensure the highest possible profitability. This results in a product range with which an operator can truly make money.

Profitable all-rounder

The VDL Futura FMD2 is a coach with many possibilities. The vehicle can be used both for tour and intercity service, but is also perfect for use as a school bus for example. The 1,250 mm floor height provides easy entry and egress. The wide centre door, available as an option, can be equipped with a cassette lift to enable disabled passengers to safely enter and exit the coach. Like the FHD2, the FMD2 has a flat floor without any raised areas. This construction provides the passengers with a spacious interior without obstacles. At the same time, the flat floor saves weight. Furthermore, a floor without corners and edges is easier to clean and keep clean.
The driver enjoys the same dashboard found in the Futura FHD2, which is designed to offer the optimal combination of ergonomics, safety, organization and efficiency.
The owner/operator will find that the Futura FMD2 offers Profit of Ownership: the low net weight, reduced fuel consumption, high passenger capacity, generous luggage space and low running costs make the Futura FMD2 a highly profitable investment.

Available models
The Futura FMD2 is available in two different lengths: the FMD2-122 with a length of 12.2 metres, and the FMD2-129 with a length of 12.9 metres. Engine options for the efficient driveline include the new generation of DAF Euro 6 engines, the MX-11 240 (240 kW – 326 hp) and MX-11 271 (271 kW – 369 hp). These engines can be combined with a ZF EcoShift 6-speed manual gearbox, a ZF AS Tronic 12-speed semi-automatic gearbox or the ZF EcoLife 6-speed fully-automatic gearbox. The Futura FMD2 will be available from mid-2014.

Modular construction
In developing this new Futura model, optimum use was made of the modular system around which the Futura range is built. As with the FHD2, the unibody construction of the FMD2 also serves as a safety cage. The individual modules (chassis, side walls, front and rear ends) are constructed of high-strength stainless steel. The completely assembled vehicle has a high stiffness, the most important factor for good driving characteristics. The stable superstructure is not only of influence on the safety but also on driver and passenger comfort: The sandwich panel roof with two exceptionally stiff roll bars at the front and rear saves weight and contributes to the enormous strength of the coach. With a structure built of 3Cr12 stainless steel, the Futura is well protected against corrosion and is therefore assured of a long service life. Thanks to this material the Futura offers excellent weight distribution. And because the coach weighs less, it also consumes less fuel.

Design
Despite the 20 cm height difference compared to the Futura FHD2, the FMD2 looks just as solid and robust. Design differences have been kept to a minimum. For example, the dynamic arrow-shaped headlight units, which in addition to powerful headlights also include integrated LED daytime running lights, are black on the FMD2. The entire front end of the bus, including the rooftop, is painted the base colour, while on the FHD2 these parts are black.
