Philips and VDL sign collaboration agreement to equip buses and coaches with ‘smart’ AEDs and emergency services

Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) and VDL Bus & Coach have signed a collaboration agreement to equip VDL buses and coaches with AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) as optional factory equipment. With this initiative VDL Bus & Coach intends to make bus and coach transport even safer for its customers' passengers. It concerns the buses and coaches for city and regional transport and international travel that help millions of people worldwide to reach their destinations daily.





On-board resuscitation system and emergency service intended to increase cardiac arrest survival rate of bus and coach passengers
When a bus or coach operator chooses this option, their bus or coach is delivered with a special ‘connected’ AED kit on board. This gives users live support and coaching from first responders at a central location during resuscitation and also makes remote maintenance and service possible. In addition, it is possible to see in real-time whether an AED has been activated and determine its exact location via GPS.

An estimated seven million people die as a result of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States and Europe each year. Victims resuscitated within six minutes after cardiac arrest have a much higher survival rate (50 to 70% versus 5 to 10%). It is therefore important to have help close at hand, even when people are on the move. By installing an AED help can be provided immediately in emergency situations while underway. This will considerably improve the chance of survival of bus and coach passengers who suffer a cardiac arrest.

From now on, passenger transport companies that order a bus or coach from VDL Bus & Coach can tick the AED plus emergency service box on the option list. The AED will then be delivered as factory installed equipment. Bus and coach operators are relieved of responsibility for maintenance and testing by Philips' new full-service model, in which the AED and everything associated with it can be purchased from Philips as a service for a fixed amount per month.

And that’s a good thing, because it will save more lives.”

Connected AED with GPS
Philips and VDL are going to utilize the new ‘connected’ AED technology with numerous additional functionalities. These functions are offered to companies and institutions by Philips and cooperating partners in subscription form to make the implementation of a company-wide AED program simple and cost-effective.

The AED kit is fitted with special communications technology that automatically reports whether the system is working properly and ready for use. The status of individual systems can be monitored remotely and the appropriate people can be notified by e-mail, text or phone. In addition, it is possible to see in real-time whether an AED has been activated and the exact location can be determined via GPS. The kit can also measure the ambient temperature and relative humidity around the AED. Live support and coaching during resuscitation can be provided through a voice communication function that links the user to an emergency service. The all-in subscription system gives the customer the advantage of having no additional costs for maintenance and no investment in equipment.
